Jeeps during the first Southern California SkillzDay at Hungry Valley SVRA.

For more than a decade, MetalCloak SkillzDay has helped thousands of Jeep owners become more confident, more capable, and safer on the trail.

Now, for the first time ever, we're bringing that same proven program to Southern California.

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, we'll be hosting our inaugural Southern California SkillzDay at Hungry Valley SVRA in partnership with the Friends of Hungry Valley (FOHV). If you've ever wished someone had taken the time to explain what your Jeep can really do... or if you've been nervous about scratching your paint, using your lockers, or simply picking the right line... this event was built for you.

What Makes SkillzDay Different?

There are plenty of trail rides.

There are plenty of Jeep meetups.

SkillzDay is different because the goal isn't simply driving trails... it's learning why you're driving them the way you are.

We created SkillzDay back in 2012 because we saw too many new Jeep owners being thrown onto difficult trails without understanding:

  • Proper tire placement

  • How suspension actually works

  • What lockers really do

  • When to disconnect sway bars

  • Safe hill climbs and descents

  • Recovery basics

  • Spotter communication

  • Vehicle limitations

  • Driver confidence

Instead of learning through expensive mistakes, SkillzDay lets you learn in a controlled environment with experienced instructors coaching you every step of the way.

Why Hungry Valley?

Hungry Valley SVRA has long been one of Southern California's premier off-road destinations.

Located near Gorman along Interstate 5, the park offers thousands of acres of terrain and an incredible variety of trails that make it an ideal classroom for developing real-world off-road skills. The park continues to recover from the 2024 Post Fire and has reopened much of its trail system thanks to extensive work by California State Parks and volunteers, making events like this an exciting part of the area's continued growth.

What You'll Learn

The day combines classroom-style instruction with hands-on driving.

You'll rotate through practical training stations covering topics like:

  • Tire placement

  • Climbing and descending obstacles

  • Suspension articulation

  • Using lockers properly

  • Spotter communication

  • Recovery techniques

  • Airing down

  • Trail etiquette

  • Basic vehicle inspection

  • Safe obstacle approach

Every lesson builds toward helping you become a smarter, safer off-road driver.

Then You Put It Into Practice

Learning is only half the experience.

Once you've completed the morning instruction, you'll head onto the trails with experienced trail guides where you'll immediately begin applying everything you've learned.

This is where confidence starts replacing uncertainty.

By the end of the day, many attendees discover their Jeep is capable of far more than they ever imagined... and that they're capable of much more as drivers as well.

Built for New Drivers... Valuable for Everyone

SkillzDay is designed primarily for newer off-road enthusiasts, but even experienced drivers often walk away having learned something new.

This year's event will feature both:

  • Novice Group... perfect if this is your first SkillzDay or you're just getting started.

  • Advanced Beginner Group... ideal for returning participants looking to continue building their skills.

Splitting the groups allows for more coaching, more seat time, and a better learning experience for everyone.

More Than Just Training

One of the best parts of SkillzDay is the community.

Throughout the day you'll have opportunities to meet:

  • Fellow Jeep enthusiasts

  • Off-road clubs

  • Industry partners

  • Volunteers

  • Trail advocates

  • Friends of Hungry Valley

You'll also enjoy morning coffee and donuts, a hot lunch, demonstrations, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions throughout the day.

Come Learn Before the Big Trails

Many Jeep owners dream of taking on destinations like the Rubicon Trail, Johnson Valley, Moab, or the countless trails scattered across Southern California.

SkillzDay is designed to help prepare you for those adventures.

You'll leave with practical knowledge that makes every future trail ride safer, more enjoyable, and far less intimidating.

Whether your Jeep is completely stock or already modified, learning proper technique is one of the best upgrades you can make.

Join Us at Hungry Valley

If you've been waiting for the perfect opportunity to build confidence behind the wheel, this is it.

We're excited to bring MetalCloak SkillzDay to Southern California for the very first time, and we can't wait to help a whole new group of Jeep owners discover what both they and their vehicles are capable of.

We'll see you on the trail.
